Every once in a while when I tell someone my age (52), the question of what is "your secret" comes up. My son actually makes jokes when he sees pictures of what I looked like at 18 versus how I look today (look at the pictures to the left, I am with my mother in the picture on the bottom left) -- he calls it The Curious Case of Carolyn Gray (a play on the movie title, "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" where the character ages in reverse) because apparently, I look younger now than I did then. As much as I hate to admit it, HE'S RIGHT!
It's all good though because it inspired me to create a place to share my "secrets" as well as the advice I pick up along the way on beauty, diet, fitness, fashion, health and life in general. These "secrets" have been life-changing for me, and I hope they will be for you as well. So, tune in, and keep coming back for practical, honest advice and real talk on how I learned to look and feel my best @ any age and how you can too.
In addition to loving to share information on looking and feeling your best at any age, I am also a wife (over 25 years) and a mother of two wonderful sons (22 and 20). I love God and my family, as well as life, laughter and happy endings. Some of my passions include TALKING, writing and encouraging people, as well as giving advice – whether you ask for it or not! If I find answers or solutions, I MUST share them – whether face-to-face, by video or e-mail. If I don’t share what I learn, I sometimes feel as if I might explode, which leads me to bombard my family and friends with advice, often unsolicited. In fact, my youngest son has dubbed me an Oprah-wannabe and accuses me of overloading everyone with information. However, instead of being insulted, I must admit HE IS RIGHT!
DREAMING EXTRAORDINARY DREAMS
While I am a fan of happy endings, I am no stranger to adversity and struggle. Originally from Augusta, GA, I grew up in a "projects" (also known as low-income housing) called Underwood Homes (an area commonly referred to as “The Bottom”) during the 70’s and 80’s. I was an only child raised in a single-parent home after my mother divorced my alcoholic, abusive father, and my childhood was marked by sadness and isolation as I dealt with the ill-effects of an absentee father, limited financial resources, discouragement, negative influences, as well as the devastation of sexual molestation… All of these were contributing factors to childhood and early adulthood battles with weight and self-esteem.
MAKING EXTRAORDINARY DREAMS HAPPEN
Regardless of those battles, I have always had an undying belief that with God’s help you can accomplish anything, as well as a willingness to walk by faith and not by sight, which actually worked! The proof? I graduated from Clemson University (where I met my husband) in 1989 with a degree in Computer Information Systems. Since then my career has mainly been in the field of information technology, working for companies such as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Price Waterhouse Coopers, SAIC, MCI, Nextel, Sprint, the Department of Labor, as well as Fannie Mae. I also added “author-preneur” (part author and part entrepreneur) to my resume with the publication of my first book, The Black Woman’s Guide to Beautiful, Healthier Hair in 6 Weeks! in 1999 (a second edition was published in 2003). Next came a line of hair care products, Healthier Hair in a Bottle, and my last book was Secrets of a Skinny Jean Queen®: A 7-Step Guide to Help You Eat & Act Like You Have Some Sense was published in 2010. An e-book called Looking & Feeling Your Best @ Any Age was published in 2013 during my e-Formation Queen phase (see www.YouTube.com/eformationqueen for more on that), which will be updated this year and eventually turned into an actual book and seminar series. It is amazing that my self-esteem, appearance and fitness/energy levels are better at 51 than they ever were at 18, and I can't wait to share what I have learned on my journey to this point with you all! Stay tuned!
